Common questions

The basics

Is English Habibi free?

Yes. The app is free, with no ads and nothing to buy.

Which devices does it work on?

iPhone with iOS 17 or later.

Do I need an account?

No. There is no sign-up and no login. You open the app and start learning.

Where do I start if I already know some English?

The Beginners zone is optional. Level 1, Builder, is open from the start, and passing a level's first star quiz opens the next level.

Your progress

Where is my progress saved?

Only on your iPhone, inside the app. We do not have a copy, so we cannot restore it for you.

If you delete the app, your progress is deleted with it unless you saved a backup first.

How do I back up my progress or move it to a new phone?

In the app, open Settings, then Reminders & backup, and save a backup file. Keep the file somewhere safe, such as the Files app or iCloud Drive.

On the new phone, open the same screen and restore from that file. Restoring replaces everything on that phone with the backup.

How do I start again from zero?

In the app, open Settings and choose Reset all progress. This cannot be undone.

Speaking, voices and the camera

Do I have to use the microphone?

No. The microphone is only used for speaking practice, and the rest of the app works without it. Recordings are not saved.

To turn it on or off later, open your iPhone's Settings app, find English Habibi, and change Microphone and Speech Recognition there.

The voice sounds robotic. Can I change it?

Yes. The app uses the voices installed on your iPhone. In your iPhone's Settings app, go to Accessibility, Spoken Content, Voices, English, then download a voice marked Premium or Enhanced. It is free.

Go back to English Habibi, open Settings, and pick the new voice.

What does the word scanner do with my camera?

It reads printed text through the camera so you can save words you meet while reading. The text is read on your phone, and no images are saved or uploaded.

Why can't I see writing feedback?

Writing feedback uses Apple Intelligence, which runs on iPhone 15 Pro and newer. It also needs Apple Intelligence turned on in your iPhone's Settings. On other iPhones the feature is hidden and everything else works as normal.

Exams and certificates

Is this an official PTE or IELTS app?

No. English Habibi is independent. It is not affiliated with or endorsed by Pearson, IDP, the British Council, Cambridge or NAATI.

All practice material is our own writing. The exam practice is for practice only: it gives no official scores and cannot predict a real result.

Are the English University certificates real qualifications?

No. They are for fun and motivation. Please do not present one as a real qualification.

Widgets

How do I add the Word of the Day widget?

Touch and hold an empty part of your Home Screen until the apps jiggle. Tap Edit in the top corner (or the + button on iOS 17), choose Add Widget, and search for English Habibi. Choose Word of the Day or Today's study, pick a size, and add it.
